Dartmouth Steam Railway

The Dartmouth Steam Railway operates services all year although these are scaled back in the winter months. The services operates from Paignton railway station which can be reached from The Muntham Apartments and Town House is about fifteen minutes.

Services on the Dartmouth Steam Railway

The Dartmouth Steam Railway runs from Paignton to Kingswear for 7 miles passing through stunning coastal scenery, amazing countryside and finally alonside the majestic River Dart.

From Kingswear it is possible to catch the little ferry that takes passengers across the River Dart so that they can spend some time in the beautiful town of Dartmouth. From here it is possible to take river boat trips on the steam paddle ship Kingswear Castle. This service operates on selected dates from June to September.

And of course there is the now legendary Christmas Train of Lights.

Steam Railways in South Devon

South Devon Steam Railway

For fans of steam railways another option is the South Devon Steam Railway that runs between Totnes Riverside station and Buckfastleigh station on a 14 mile round trip. The routes takes passengers through some stunning south Devon countryside and runs along the River Dart for a large part of the journey.

As a day out Totnes has a lot to offer. There is Totnes Castle which is an original Norman Motte and Bailey Castle and immediately next to the steam railway is The Totnes Rare Breeds Farm. And of course Totnes has a whole host of unique and independent traders.

Close to Buckfast Station is the Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies attraction and there are gardens, children play areas, riverside walks, a museum and a gift shop.
