This National Trust property near Salcombe is a must for anyone with a love of gardens. Journey time from The Muntham Apartments and Town House is about an hour away so it is worth making a day of it and vi..siting Salcombe and other part sof south Devon too.

The Garden At Overbecks

The gardens are truly the star at the property. They are the National Trust's warmest garden on mainland Britain and plants can be grown here that cannot be grown elsewhere in the Trust's properties. There are a mix of formal gardens and more informal areas ith some thing interesting to see at every turn and in every season. 

There is also the added benefit of some stunning coastal views as well as views over the Salcombe estuary.

From the gardens it is also possible to go out onto the cliff path and enjoy more of the stunning coastal secenery.

 

Overbecks Rejuvenator

Otto Overbeck - Inventor

The house was built for inventor Otto Overbeck and was a replacement for one previously on the site. To take advantage of its cliff top setting, the replacement house was set back further to allow for a larger terrace at the front of the house overlooking the sea.

Overbeck had made his fortune from his rejuvenator which he claimed could postpone or even reverse the ageing process. Although it might look like the torture kit of a Bond villain, it and its succeeding models sold in large numbers. Overbeck also invented Marmite which he called "Carnos" as well as non alchoholic beer but he failed to make these financially successful for various reasons and others made money from his inventions.

The house is really nothing special architecturally although it does have some fascinating  things in it including Otto's art collection, an example of his "rejuvenator" and the marvelous polyphon music machine which staff happily play.
